Typhoon risk and climate-change impact assessment for cultural heritage asset roofs

چکیده

Abstract Recent catastrophic events in Southeast Asia have emphasized that roofs made of wood/steel frames and lightweight metal roofing sheets are the most vulnerable component building envelope when subjected to typhoon-induced wind uplift. This also applies aging cultural heritage (CH) assets, which deserve special consideration because their intangible value for local communities, essential role inclusive sustainable socio-economic development through tourism. paper introduces a simulation-based framework fragility analysis typhoon risk assessment CH-asset roofs. Fastener pullout roof-panel pullover explicitly considered proposed model progressive failure roof system. A simplified geometry is assumed, requiring limited information about structure under investigation low computational resources. Such burden allows modeling wind-induced demands capacities probabilistically as well considering effects load redistributions due fastener fastener/roof-panel corrosion. Variance-based sensitivity (i.e., Sobol’ indices) based on polynomial chaos expansions limit state function performed, highlighting parameters affecting typhoon-fragility variance then attention during data collection. Climate-change impact estimates finally investigated use various scenarios time-dependent modifying hazard profile site where assets interest located. The applied 25 CH Iloilo City, Philippines. required input was collected rapid visual surveying combined with new technologies, such drones. It shown can be adopted practice both prioritization at building-portfolio level building-specific level.

International Approaches to Climate Change and Cultural Heritage

Anthropogenic climate change is increasingly threatening cultural heritage; cultural resource managers, communities, and archaeologists are confronting this reality. Yet the phenomenon is happening over such a wide range of physical and sociocultural contexts that it is a problem too big for any one organization or discipline to tackle. Therefore, the sharing of best practices and examples betw...

A preliminary impact assessment of typhoon wind risk of residential buildings in Japan under future climate change

This paper performs a quantitative impact assessment of the climate change on typhoon wind risk, focusing on residential buildings in Japan. The risk is assessed based on (1) the typhoon event set extracted from the simulation by the super-high resolution atmospheric general circulation model developed within the KAKUSHIN program; (2) the probabilistic typhoon modeling scheme developed by our g...

Stochastic Simulation for Climate Change Risk Assessment and Management

The risk management paradigm has been proposed by a number of national and international research organisations as a useful framework for identifying robust decisions in the face of the inherent uncertainties associated with climate variability and anthropogenic climate change. The pursuance of risk management hinges on four fundamental considerations: a) a threshold for a particular system of ...

Managing Uncertainty in Climate Change Projections – Issues for Impact Assessment

Climate change projection is the term the IPCC Second Assessment Report (SAR) uses for model estimates of future climate. In that report, projections are presented in two forms: as single model scenarios and as projected ranges of uncertainty. In climate studies, scenarios are commonly regarded as being plausible, but have no further probability attached. Projected ranges of uncertainty can hav...

Heat-related mortality risk model for climate change impact projection.

OBJECTIVES We previously developed a model for projection of heat-related mortality attributable to climate change. The objective of this paper is to improve the fit and precision of and examine the robustness of the model. METHODS We obtained daily data for number of deaths and maximum temperature from respective governmental organizations of Japan, Korea, Taiwan, the USA, and European count...
